On Thursday 18th September, Solihull Moors Foundation staff and volunteers took on our decorated Over 65’s Walking Football team for a third time.

Going into the game, our Walking Football team were 2-0 up in the series following an 11-1 blowout victory in game one and a hard fought 6-5 victory in the last meeting.

Game 3 started off with the Over 65’s comfortably dictating possession whilst the Foundation focused on maintaining their shape and staying organised. Both teams were able to create chances through decisive passing and fast ball movement and either team could have, and probably should have, broken the deadlock before half time but all was square at 0-0 as the referee bought the first half to a close.

The second half started similarly, with the Over 65’s taking the early foothold leading to the deadlock being broken. Some intricate play around the Foundation box, lead to a shot, brilliantly blocked, but the rebound fell to the feet of prolific striker ‘Irish’ who smashed home past Josh Travis in goal to give the Over 65’s the lead early into the second half.

The Foundation did well to stay in the game as the 65’s enjoyed a confident spell in possession after the goal but with the introduction of Moorish co-owner Louie Peniket as a focal point for the Foundation attack, they got a foothold in the game and began to create chances again.

The scores were levelled up 5 minutes from time when Jordan Mannion collected the ball after a nice passage of play and drilled a low shot past the outstretched arm of the goalkeeper.Neither side were able to find the winner in the closing stages of the game and the scores finished level at 1-1.

It was fantastic game played competitively and in great spirits with the quality of our Walking Footballers clearly on show. The Foundation, however, will be looking to go one better in the next fixture and claim their first victory of the series!
