Steel Park, Corby | May 2025
Solihull Moors Over 50s produced a sensational display of walking football to retain their title at Steel Park, finishing the tournament with a flawless record of nine straight wins. The defending champions returned with determination, discipline, and a deadly eye for goal - once again proving themselves the team to beat.
The campaign began with a confident 1-0 win over hosts Corby Town, with Mick Cox getting the tournament off to a flying start. That momentum carried into the next match against Rushden & Diamonds, where Paul Clarke coolly finished a sublime pass from Phil Clinton.
Moors then shifted into top gear with a 4-1 win over Oundle, showcasing their attacking flair. A brace from Clarke, plus goals from Cox and Clinton, had the team firing on all cylinders. The fourth match saw a solid 3-1 win against Kettering Town, with goals from Brendan Wilkin, Paul Clarke, and Andy Powers.
Another narrow but deserved 1-0 victory over Skegness followed, Clarke once again proving the difference-maker. That made it five wins in five. A composed 2-0 win over Rothwell Pirates (goals from Brendan Maxwell and Phil Clinton) set the tone for a composed finish to the group stage.
The group finale saw a repeat of last years final with Kettering WFC, where Paul Clarke netted his 6th goal of the tournament in yet another 1-0 win. That result confirmed top spot and a perfect 7-from-7 record in the group.
In the semi-final, the Moors met familiar opponents Oundle once again. This time, it was a more cautious affair, but the outcome remained in Moors’ favour as Brendan Maxwell struck the only goal to send Moors into the final for the second consecutive year.
The final against Skegness Town promised to be a tense affair - and it delivered. Moors showed their class and composure under pressure, securing a 2-1 victory with goals from Andy Powers and Brendan Wilkin, sealing an incredible tournament run.
With nine matches played, nine wins secured, and just three goals conceded, it was a comprehensive display of quality, teamwork, and tournament know-how.
While the goals stole headlines, defensive solidity was just as vital to Solihull Moors’ perfect run - and at the heart of it was goalkeeper Tony Newton.
Newton recorded an impressive six clean sheets across the tournament, keeping things calm and composed at the back. His reflexes, positioning, and leadership were crucial throughout, especially in the tight knockout matches.
His standout moment came in the semi-final against Oundle, where he pulled off a fantastic save to preserve the narrow 1-0 lead and secure Moors’ place in the final.
A truly top-class performance between the posts and a major contributor to the team's success.
Adding to the pride of the club, our Over 65s side also had a magnificent tournament run, battling all the way to the final where they narrowly lost to a strong Norwich Soca Seniors side. Their efforts nearly secured a remarkable double victory for Solihull Moors on the day.
