Walking with Purpose: Solihull Moors' Colin Yates Champions the Kicking Cancer Cause

At an age when many might be slowing down, Colin Yates, a key figure in the Solihull Moors Over 60s and Over 65s Walking Football teams, is stepping up - in more ways than one. Not only is he still lacing up his boots to compete at a high level, but he’s also passionately dedicated to a cause close to his heart: Kicking Cancer.

From Trials to Triumph

The England Kicking Cancer Walking Football project has provided Colin and others like him with an opportunity that goes far beyond the game. The selection process for England's over and under 60s squads began back in September 2024, with a demanding set of trials hosted at venues such as Bishops Cleeve, Millwall FC, and Birmingham WFC. The end result was the formation of a remarkable 24-player squad - all of whom are either living with or in remission from cancer.

For Colin, this journey culminated in a proud personal milestone: being named captain of the England Over 60s team.“It was an honour to represent my country,” says Colin. “But even more than that, it was a privilege to act as an ambassador for the Kicking Cancer project. It’s more than football - it’s hope, camaraderie, and a statement that life doesn’t end with a diagnosis.”

First Internationals – Jersey 2025

The squad's first international experience took place in St. Helier, Jersey, where they faced two strong teams from the host nation. Despite the competition, the experience proved far more valuable than just the scorelines. It was a celebration of resilience, support, and shared strength.

Looking ahead, the squad is not resting on its laurels. July sees a fixture against the England Ladies Over 40s and Over 50s in Gloucester, followed by a trip to Spain later in the year to compete in the international League of Nations Walking Football Tournament.

Midlands Mission: Playing for a Purpose

Closer to home, Colin plays an active role in the TLH Kicking Cancer Midlands team. Named in honour of the late Tony Linforth Hall, the group travels across the region, playing exhibition matches to spread awareness about walking football and its positive impact on those dealing with cancer. The team is a shining example of community spirit, inclusivity, and the enduring power of sport.

A Word on Men’s Health

Never one to shy away from tough conversations, Colin also uses his platform to advocate for men’s health awareness, particularly around prostate cancer. “All it takes is a simple blood test to check your PSA levels,” he says. “No excuses. Be proactive. You owe it to yourself, your family, and your friends.”

A Role Model On and Off the Pitch

Colin Yates may wear the captain’s armband for England, but it’s his off-the-pitch leadership that truly sets him apart. At Solihull Moors and beyond, his dedication to Kicking Cancer and men’s health is inspiring others to take action, get involved, and never lose hope.

Whether he’s leading a team in Jersey or giving advice in the Midlands, Colin’s message is clear: keep walking, keep fighting, and never be backwards in coming forward.
